I graduated from the University of Adelaide (Australia) with a B.Sc. Hons (Chemistry) in 2001. I then went on to do a Ph.D. with Prof. Stephen Lincoln in the University of Adelaide. My thesis title was "Interactions of Proximate Amino Acid Residues in Polyaza Macrocycles". My Ph.D. consisted of the synthesis and complexation of a series of pendant arm polyaza macrocycles, designed to test the practicality of attaching amino acids to tri and tetra amino cyclic aliphatic amines and their subsequent adaptation to fluorescent sensors for metal ions. I was then awarded an IRCEST postdoctoral research fellowship, which has allowed me the pleasure of working with Assoc. Prof. Thorri Gunnlaugsson in his supramolecular and medicinal research group. I am currently working on developing supramolecular water-soluble luminescent sensors for anions. My main area of interest is into the development of sensors, which can act on either an inter or intra molecular level. I am also very interested in metal ion complexes as enzyme mimics, ion-channels, chemical delivery systems, pH probes and their role in furthering the understanding into molecular recognition. I also have a passion for travelling and the wines of the world and my desire is to see every country in the world. |
